With Metalhead By Design
Meet Kimberly, The Founder of Metalhead By Design
Laura: First things first, tell me about your business? What do you create and who do you create it for?
Kimberly: I am Kimberly with Metalhead by Design, A Handmade Jewelry Designer from Virginia Beach, VA. I design jewelry, accessories and skincare to help women feel fierce and feminine. I love to combine materials like Copper, Cork, leather, ammo, gemstones and crystal. I pair them with traditional metalsmithing craftsmanship, wire wrapping, and electroforming to make pieces as distinctive as their owners.
Laura: How did you first get started in your industry?
Kimberly: By complete accident. I was working in management and not seeing my kids so I took a job in mental health that was m-f and 9-5ish hours but it was soul sucking. I was unhappy and looking for something to take my mind off work. I found a metalsmithing video and tried it out and feel in love. Before I knew it I had made a few sells and I was hook. With the full support of my husband and kids I took it full time.
Laura: What is one thing you want people to know about you, that they may not already know?
Kimberly: I love working with my hands and staying busy. I used to repair campers and trailers which I loved so much. I also ran a skeet range and sold firearms. Oh, and I listen to Heavy Metal.
Laura: What do you struggle with most when it comes to running your own business?
Kimberly: Staying consistent. I have 4 kids and can easily get distracted with household needs because I run my business from home.
Laura: What is one thing that comes really easy for you?
Kimberly: I am a talker so connecting with others and connecting them with others is like second nature.
Laura: What aspect of your business is the most rewarding?
Kimberly: My customers! I love people and I love making them happy so that is for sure my favorite part.
Laura: How do you manage the stress and overwhelm of running your own business?
Kimberly: Honestly, I have not got that part down yet. I will for sure say I have more good days than bad days but I am still learning how to run a business so it gets crazy here.
Laura: Who influences or inspires you the most in regards to your industry?
Kimberly: Charles Lewis Tiffany founder of Tiffany and Co. When I heard that during a huge snow storm that shut down New York City he still walked to work everyday for his customers I thought that was true customer service. There is a great documentary on Amazon video call Crazy about Tiffany’s which is worth a watch.
Laura: You have “a worthy brand,” I can see that, but why do you feel your brand is worthy? How do you remind yourself of your worth to continue building your business each day, how do you remind yourself, you are worth it!
Kimberly: This is a hard one. I would have to say knowing that I am making pieces and products that bring smiles and strength to others is what reminds me that I am a worthy brand.
Laura: And last… if you could give new or struggling entrepreneurs one piece of advice, what would it be?
Kimberly: Breath! Don’t get discouraged when you come up with an idea and then see some one else is doing it. All of us come from one and that is the beauty of it and the reason that sometimes we have the same ideas. Also, it is a process and a lot to learn. Ask for help!! You must ask for help, somebody knows something you don’t, and that’s okay. One day you will be the person to answer the questions.

Thank you so much Kimberly for sharing yourself and your brand with us. Also, I love how real you are. Kimberly doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, but what makes her such a badass is her willingness to keep going and pushing through. She shows up…and that’s what winners do!
Her work is stunning and electroforming is truly an art form. She works with some beautiful raw gemstones and creates these unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. No two stones are ever exactly the same.
