Meet Raejean, The Founder of Picturesque Muse

Laura: First things first, tell me about your business? What do you create and who do you create it for?

Raejean: I create mindful photography for over-stressed corporate women.

Laura: How did you first get started in your industry?

Raejean: My dad bought me my first camera when I was 5. I took an official class in college and played with photography when I could. I got serious about building my skill about 5 years ago. I launched Picturesque Muse almost 3 years ago.

Laura: What is one thing you want people to know about you, that they may not already know?

Raejean: I’ve had many hard-learned lessons, and I work to always be learning. I genuinely want to share my knowledge and provide a short cut to the lessons I’ve learned.  I have a passion for mindfulness and self-care. I want to share that passion with other women and walk the path together to live our purpose.

Laura: What do you struggle with most when it comes to running your own business?

Raejean: It was hard telling people I’m a professional photographer, I definitely struggle with imposter syndrome. But I have built ‘evidence’ that I am good at what I do and that my photography can make a difference in people’s lives.

Laura: What is one thing that comes really easy for you?

Raejean: The actual photography comes the easiest to me. Getting outside with my camera and taking the pictures.

Laura: What aspect of your business is the most rewarding?

Raejean: The most rewarding aspect of my business is hearing one of my photos touched another human’s heart. Photography could happen in a vacuum. I could take pictures for myself and get plenty of enjoyment just from taking the pictures. But it’s so much more meaningful when those pictures are shared
and there’s a heart connection between me and the viewer.

Laura: How do you manage the stress and overwhelm of running your own business?

Raejean: There’s a creativity in running a business, but it’s totally different from the creativity of photography. There are so many hats to wear and aspects to learn, and unfortunately, I’m not good at all the things. I work to give myself grace, and constantly remind myself that I can only do what I can do.  This year, I’m being more intentional about setting time aside for photography hikes and some in-home creative play with still life photography.

Laura: Who influences or inspires you the most in regards to your industry?

Raejean: Walking into Peter Lik’s gallery in Waikiki inspired me to start my photography business. His work is so moving and I wanted to be a part of something like that.

Laura: You have “a worthy brand,” I can see that, but why do you feel your brand is worthy? How do you remind yourself of your worth to continue building your business each day, how do you remind yourself, you are worth it!

Raejean: What makes Picturesque Muse a ‘worthy brand’ is its link to the message of mindfulness and abundant living. My business isn’t just about me, or making money. It’s about giving women the tools and techniques to live authentically. By not working on my business every day or forgetting my value, I’m keeping these women I love so much from reaching higher levels.

Laura: And last… if you could give new or struggling entrepreneurs one piece of advice, what would it be?

Raejean: Be persistent and willing to put in the hard work. Also be open to opportunities to pivot on a different path to your goal.
