Hand Poured Candles
Meet Joy, The Founder Of Sheer Joy Scents
Laura: First things first, tell me about your business? What do you create and who do you create it for?
Joy: My name is Joy Roberts and together my husband and I own Sheer Joy Scents. We create candles and wax melts that soothe and comfort you with fragrances that are strong, satisfying and long lasting. Our wood wicks bring a soft crackle for all to enjoy.
Laura: How did you first get started in your industry?
Joy: I first began in 2013 looking for something to do as my boys were becoming school age. You see, I have never been one to sit around & do nothing all day. I Chose candle making because it kept me away from my bedroom and out in the kitchen where I would easily be available for my children when they needed me.
Laura: What is one thing you want people to know about you, that they may not already know?
Joy: I love to encourage & inspire others.
Laura: What do you struggle with most when it comes to running your own business?
Joy: Oh Golly I always OVERTHINK everything! Way to often I come up with a simple idea that “should” take an hour or so to accomplish and before I realize it I am LOST in a sea of creativity and I have a hard time completing my task. I also find planning challenging. I am a free sprit & am very prone to doing what ever whim hits me at the time.
Laura: What is one thing that comes really easy for you?
Joy: Building pretty graphics! I could do that all day long. Posting them is challenging, but building the pretty graphics is a an escape for me. It’s hard not to get lost in the creative process.
Laura: What aspect of your business is the most rewarding?
Joy: I love happy customers! When I know I have made someone smile it totally makes my day!
Laura: How do you manage the stress and overwhelm of running your own business?
Joy: I simply stop work when my husband comes home from work. It wasn’t always that way though I used to stay working on a task for 12to15 hours a day because I thought I HAD too. However the truth of the matter was the work would still have been waiting for me no matter what time I ended my work day.
Laura: Who influences or inspires you the most in regards to your industry?
Joy: I love rubbing shoulders with other handmade creatives. My mom has been a constant source of artistic inspiration to me. Growing up she supported us with her stained glass business where she designed and built beautiful stained glass windows. Now she freelances doing calligraphy by hand. And She has be doing that for about 10 years.
Laura: You have “a worthy brand,” I can see that, but why do you feel your brand is worthy? How do you remind yourself of your worth to continue building your business each day, how do you remind yourself, you are worth it!
Joy: My brand is a worthy brand of candles because I aim to bring inspiration and encouragement to our customers.
With each and every sale it is just like a hug and a confirmation that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing. They are my confidence builders!
Laura: And last… if you could give new or struggling entrepreneurs one piece of advice, what would it be?
Joy: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, compare yourself to someone else who has years of experience. We all start out in the same place. And ALWAYS take the time to educate yourself, so you will GROW and ACCEPT WHERE YOU ARE at the current moment.

It was so lovely to get the chance to interview Joy. She is extremely well loved in a few of the business Facebook groups we’re both in. She has loyal customers who refer her business to others all the time. I haven’t had the chance to personally try her candles yet but I will be ordering for sure.
