Meet Rowyn, The Founder of Team Manticore

Laura: First things first, tell me about your business? What do you create and who do you create it for?

Rowyn: I’m one half of Team Manticore LLC, the other half now being my husband. I paint, sew plushies, and write comics for people who might be gently strange like I am. Our work is for anyone who wants a hint of their goth or punk lifestyle at work, or someone who wants to add a little cuteness into their spooky. Also, our “Frightdorable” (a little frightening, a little adorable) plushies help a variety of charities!

Laura: How did you first get started in your industry?

Rowyn: I did my first craft show at a balloon festival when I was 12, and I never wanted to stop. I loved the smiles I got, and I’ve always felt right creating things. I had my first illustration job soon after, and that’s when I understood that art could be a viable career for me.

Laura: What is one thing you want people to know about you, that they may not already know?

Rowyn: I’m disabled.  There are days where I’m totally fine, and can do everything myself, and there are days where I have trouble getting out of bed.  I’ve learned some tricks to work around my limitations, and I’ve also learned (and struggled with) how to be kind to myself.  I hope to help others like me with those same struggles.

Laura: What do you struggle with most when it comes to running your own business?

Rowyn: I’m not great at social media!  I’m naturally a little shy, and talking about myself in public was definitely something I had to learn… and continue to learn.

Laura: What is one thing that comes really easy for you?

Rowyn: Coming up with new ideas is the easiest thing in the world for me. This is so true that I’ve started a “morgue” of ideas. It’s a filing cabinet where I put all the sketches and write ups for stuff I just don’t have time or space for just yet.

Laura: What aspect of your business is the most rewarding?

Rowyn: I love that our plush toys can bring comfort to all ages, and that warm feeling people get when they know we’re donating 20% of those proceeds to a good cause.

Laura: How do you manage the stress and overwhelm of running your own business?

Rowyn: I make lists! Also, I try to delegate. I’m not great at asking for help, but sometimes I need to let my husband know when I need more support in one area or another. Otherwise, yoga and good food go a long way for me.

Laura: Who influences or inspires you the most in regards to your industry?

Rowyn: Christine McConnell makes such amazing things with an air of classy spookiness. I find her incredibly inspirational. Otherwise, Elvira, but I don’t know if she’s much into sewing and sculpting!

Laura: You have “a worthy brand,” I can see that, but why do you feel your brand is worthy? How do you remind yourself of your worth to continue building your business each day, how do you remind yourself, you are worth it!

Rowyn: It’ll sound odd, but raising my prices helped me see my worth. I started making more sales after I did so, partly because I wasn’t seen as a hobbyist doing discount crafts anymore. So practicing my own value until I could see it myself helped. Beyond that, the joy we help bring into the world keeps me going. A lot of our customers are goths, punk rockers, and so on (like us), and we love seeing how overjoyed anyone can be while wearing that much eyeliner! Everyone deserves to be happy.

Laura: And last… if you could give new or struggling entrepreneurs one piece of advice, what would it be?

Rowyn: Everything takes time. Research, pace yourself, and don’t be disheartened if it isn’t all immediately how you want it. Keep what works, dump what doesn’t, and then continue forward!
